John’s gospel differs from the “synoptic” gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) in many ways, most notably in his recording of seven major “I am” statements of Jesus. Each “I am” statement involves a metaphor where Jesus compares Himself to something. By using these metaphors (comparison), Jesus was taking something the people were familiar with and teaching them how He provided LIFE for them in a similar way.
