There were many times when David felt as if the cords of death were wrapping themselves around his neck (18:4). During the first 15 years after being anointed as a youth, Saul repeatedly tried to kill him. Then, during the first 20 years of his rule, he faced other nations that were fighting against him. He could not have survived without God’s ongoing protection.
